SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE
🎄BOOK REVIEW & IRISH SHORTBREAD COOKIES!🎄
Small Things Like These is the deeply moving story of what happens when an ordinary man begins to question the injustices around him, and whether he can rise above the complicity of his small Irish town. Bill Furlong has led an unremarkable life. But he is plagued by a restlessness and unease he cannot name, an impatience with frivolity and a yearning for more meaning. When Bill witnesses a terrible cruelty shrouded in systemic corruption, he is forced to make a choice that will test his principles, his courage and the very foundation of his community.

What makes this slim but powerful book beloved by so many? I think it is the feeling it evokes that, however good a person we may be, there may be an even better one inside, we must only dig deeper to find out. Do we need to accept wrongdoing in the world around us, for fear of retribution or genuine indifference? Or can we strive to be better than an uncaring world, finding purpose, even joy, in moral clarity? These are questions that are woven through the spare prose, gradual development of Bill’s character, and connection to his backstory. This special novel takes place at Christmastime in Ireland, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful story for the holidays (or anytime at all)!

These little Irish shortbread cookies are teeny tiny and very apropos to the title of this book! I made them using a cookie stamp which was weirdly satisfying and so much fun. There were a few other desserts in this story but I’m always looking for an excuse to make cookies in December!
