THE FROZEN RIVER

Ending the year with one of my favorites of 2024! Based on actual people and events, The Frozen River is a gripping tale of a midwife in the late 1700s who is determined to see justice served after a violent crime shakes her small Maine town. Set during a time when women were meant to be submissive and meek, Martha Ballard is anything but - she must investigate a grisly murder on her own, facing down the powerful forces that threaten her safety and everything she believes in.

This suspenseful novel has fascinating history, family drama, a tender love story and a page turning mystery! Especially timely are the ways women have always had to fight for agency over their own bodies, and to be believed in accusations of assault. This story of revenge and small town secrets was some of the best historical fiction I’ve read. (Extra points for some lovely animal cameos.) I loved this one!

I’ve been saving this for a wintery post - this book has freezing temps throughout making it a perfect choice to cozy up with a warm blanket and snowflake cookies! Frosting gingerbread is a favorite tradition every holiday season - it is soo relaxing to sit and decorate different snowflake patterns, I’m tempted to make them all year long!

You can find this gingerbread cookie recipe here !
