LADY TAN’S CIRCLE OF WOMEN
I LOVED this historical fiction page-turner set in 15th century China about ancient medicine and the power of female friendship! This novel follows the life of Yunxian, who is training to become a women’s doctor, and her deep and abiding friendship with Meilin, the daughter of a midwife. As Yunxian is sent away in an arranged marriage, forbidden from practicing medicine, the two must fight to continue their friendship and learning no matter the cost. Against a rich backdrop of ornate Chinese gardens and Dragon Festivals, with medical drama and scandalous plot twists, this book is a new favorite on my shelf.

Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a perfect read for Women’s History Month - or any month! I’ve added this book to my list of Books I Recommend To Everyone. The novel has fascinating history, well-paced plot, characters with depth, and even a little mystery. I learned so much about the ancient philosophies and treatment related to women’s health. I was also struck by the many ways men controlled women’s bodies, whether as a vessel to produce a male heir, or to demonstrate marriageability and status through foot binding. But what stayed with me most was the indomitable power of women supporting women, forever united by their common joys and struggles.

Early in this story, Meilin - who is of a lower station than Yunxian and thus afforded more freedom - tells her friend of some festival food she has eaten, including scallion pancakes. Authentic Chinese pancakes (cōng yōu bǐng) are very labor intensive: kneading and proofing dough, then filling, spiraling, rolling and slicing! But shortcuts abound online, so anyone can make these savory treats. Enjoy with some jasmine tea, like the kind in the story.
