MRS. QUINN’S RISE TO FAME

“I have never achieved anything of note … but I do hope to leave behind my recipes.”

This “coming of old age tale” is a complete delight! English septuagenarian Jenny Quinn has devoted her life to her husband Bernie and her love of baking, yet as she reflects on her advanced age, she can’t help but want a more significant legacy. When Jenny surreptitiously applies to be a contestant on the wildly popular Britain Bakes, she discovers the joy in having an adventure all her own. But this journey leads her to recall a painful memory from her past - and she must decide whether to reveal her secret, even if it may hurt the person she loves most of all.

This heartwarming novel was infinitely charming, and adorably sweet in more ways than one. I loved the message that it’s never too late to pursue a dream, even though it can be exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure. It was so satisfying to watch Jenny’s character grow, and allow the people around her to offer support, leaning in to their love. Through past and present, Jenny’s embarks on a delicious path of discovery that makes this one of the most endearing books I’ve read this year.

Baked Alaska, coffee walnut choux buns, sticky toffee pudding - do NOT read this book hungry! It wasn’t easy to choose what to make, but I knew I wanted to challenge myself like Jenny. No tea cakes or cookies for this post! Instead I baked the Battenberg Cake, creating side by side almond loaves, assembling like a checkerboard with apricot jam, and wrapping seamlessly in marzipan. It was SO yum and made me tempted to try Jenny’s version, with chocolate and orange
