HOW TO READ A BOOK
Let’s talk COMFORT READS! If you’re looking for an escape from the news, an antidote to the shorter days, or a hug in the form of a book, I have some recs for you, starting with this charming novel.
📚
How to Read a Book centers on three lives that are intertwined following a car accident: Violet, who is serving time in prison; Harriet, who leads a book club for women inmates; and Frank, who lost his wife. Their unexpected connections are filled with humanity, as they help each other find a life of purpose. The book asks, who is deserving of forgiveness, hope and redemption? Sprinkled between the answers are a great supporting cast of characters, a cozy bookshop, and some very endearing birds who stole my heart.
📚
What makes a comfort book, anyway? To me, it’s a book that feels like a hug and reminds me of the goodness in people, even in challenging circumstances. Here are a few of my faves:
Dinosaurs by Lydia Millet
The Matchmaker’s Gift by Lynda Loigman
Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny
The Maid by Nita Prose
The Guncle by Stephen Rowley
Mrs. Quinn’s Rise to Fame by Olivia Ford

These homemade apple cider donuts were inspired by Violet’s first job at Dunkin Donuts. This book calls for a donut for sure - not the frosted kind, but something with a little more substance. These were super easy, tasted like a crisp day at an orchard, and made my whole house smell like fall. I added some walnuts, which were a treat for the birds in this book - they may be my favorite characters of all!
