FELLOWSHIP POINT

This lovely, timeless novel focuses on the deep, decades old friendship between Agnes and Polly, now in their 80s, and the land in Maine their families have owned and loved for generations. The land’s future is in jeopardy, though, as developers and relatives eye its value. Both women are at a crossroads in their personal lives and in their abiding friendship, and this novel explores the layers of their lives as they examine what legacy they’ll leave behind.

I am so glad I finally read this special story. This is a big book at nearly 600 pages, but the length strengthened my connection to the characters, and the letters in the second half move quickly. Fellowship Point feels as though it could have been written many decades ago. Themes of aging, mortality and lasting legacy are a backdrop to gorgeous descriptions of the natural world - and the deeper meaning of who (if anyone) “owns” a plot of land, anyway. The result is one of the most beautiful books about friendship I’ve ever read.

This book also contains a mystery that comes into focus later in the story, centering on Nan, a young girl Agnes knew many years ago. When they both lived at Fellowship Point, Agnes treated her to cookies and cocoa often, and so here I’ve made some “cookies for Nan” in fall colors for the season. I wanted to make a photo that looks like pure, cozy autumn comfort, and hope that this post will bring some comfort to you if you are needing it, wherever you may be.
