PINEAPPLE STREET
It has been such a treat to team up with @gmabookclub on their fabulous March pick, Pineapple Street! Already a NYT bestseller, this family dramedy centers on the uber-wealthy Stocktons of Brooklyn Heights and their adult children. Darley is now facing the consequences of relinquishing her inheritance. Sasha, their daughter in law, is a perpetual outsider in their world of country clubs and private jets. And Georgiana has a crisis of conscience that puts her on the brink of abandoning it all. Pineapple Street is about class, privilege, secrets, and the limits of family loyalty - but it’s also about discovering what kind of adult you want to be.

This is the kind of delightful novel that is deceptively frothy, but with a very substantial helping of moral introspection. The Stocktons’ lifestyle seems superficially aspirational: Paris at ten years old, tennis clubs and private school auctions, elaborate tablescapes at every meal (oh, those tablescapes)! But the story also explores the ways that money, which binds this family inextricably together, also threatens to divide them. And why, for different reasons, each of the Stockton women begin to find these trappings of wealth to be hollow, seeking fulfillment in their own individual directions. With clever wit and laugh out loud humor, Pineapple Street explores what is the best way to be a good a decent person, one who makes the world a better place - an endeavor that goes beyond volunteerism and philanthropy, to how one treats people - especially family, especially the ones who love you the most.

For a few glorious days in early March, my entire kitchen was filled with PINEAPPLES as I fretted over their height, color and leaf width until I found just the right ones for these upside down pineapple cakes! (The book also has an interesting discussion on pineapples and colonialism - I will never look at pineapples the same way again!) Thank you again @gmabookclub for filling my month, and kitchen, with pineapples.
