888 LOVE AND THE DIVINE BURDEN OF NUMBERS

This exuberant, heartwarming coming of age story was an absolute joy! Young Wang, an earnest, pop-culture-obsessed NYU student in the mid 90s, is smitten with his new girlfriend, Erena. He can hardly believe his good luck - but according to the Chinese numerology and superstitions that have always guided him, Erena may not be the love of his life. His beloved uncle has said that Young’s seventh love would be his greatest, and by Young’s count, Erena is sixth. In flashbacks, Young looks back on his first five loves growing up in Queens - and questions whether his future with Erena will be decided by fate, or a destiny he creates for himself.

If you love a heartwarming, funny, clever story with a tender romance, don’t miss this delightful debut! 888 Love was like a John Hughes movie on steroids, with Eastern culture and snappier dialogue. I can’t remember the last time I read a character who was so vividly real, and yet reminded me somehow of an animated comic book hero (in the best way). This book was nostalgia fireworks for me! My high school new wave heart was exploding with references to my favorite 80s music, and plenty of song snippet easter eggs. But you definitely don’t need to be from my generation to enjoy this one - this is an original love story that will have you yearning for a sequel when it’s done.

If I’m going to brave the H-Mart parking lot on a Saturday you know I loved the book! This dish is inspired by the noodles Young eats on his birthday. @thewoksoflife has the best recipe as always, and helpful explanation of traditional longevity noodles. This dish may even be on repeat - much like the author’s spotify playlist for this book!

You can find this recipe here!
